ZBrush 2020 empowers artists with greater sculpting flexibility via powerful additions to the award winning brush system. We have expanded the library of sculpting brushes with the new XTractor, HistoryRecall and DecoCurve brushes. In addition, you can now constrain your brush strokes to only forward gestures with the new No Back&Forth modifier.

Beyond the new brushes we've expanded the capabilities of the MorphUV feature, which makes it possible to view the unwrapped UV layout of a model within ZBrush. Sculpt & Paint in Morph UV allows you to sculpt and paint on the 2D unwrap of a model, applying all updates to the 3D model.

  • XTractor Brushes: These three brushes convert detail from your model into a new alpha or texture for future reuse. Simply drag your stroke across the surface of any model to capture the details of your sculpt. The captured details can then be used elsewhere on the same model, or on any other model in the future.
  • HistoryRecall: Have you ever wished you could undo just a portion of your sculpting without losing everything else that has been done on the model? Now you can! This brush uses your model's Undo History but restricts the effect to the area where the brush is used. It can also be used in the other direction, projecting Redo History from part of one model to another regardless of any topology differences.
  • Move Infinite Depth: Alter your brush to apply details to anything that is directly inline with the brush cursor. For example, add volume to the front and hind legs of a dog or move several vertex points on multiple individual meshes without applying a mask. Texture Adjust by Color & PolyPaint Adjust by Color not only gives you the power to adjust the colors in a model's PolyPaint or Texture Map, it also allows you to restrict these adjustments to specific color selections. ZBrush 2020 continues to widen your ability to 3D print straight from ZBrush with new mesh analysis features: Wall Thickness, Real-Time Draft Analysis and Surface Area calculations. Now anyone will be able to easily prepare a model for production!

  • ZBrush2020 Wall ThickessWall Thickness. With this feature ZBrush uses PolyPaint to provide a visual representation of what portions of a mesh could benefit from additional thickness before sending off for use with a 3D printer, CNC machine or any other rapid prototyping method. Set your preferred minimum thickness and maximum thickness, then click the button. Now use the color coded data to make any adjustments, then click again to re-evaluate with those changes. It's as simple as that.

Switch from front to back or left to right views of any model by just clicking on icons within the CamView. You can even load any model to create your own unique custom CamView and then share it with other users.

Sometimes you just need to look at your model from a fresh perspective, making sure that it works on a foundational level. With the new Real-Time Silhouette view you'll be able to evaluate the overall shape of the model in a small window while still being able to see the same model with fully painted and sculpted details in the main document space. With everything from dedicated brushes to parametric deformations, you can adjust any aspect of your model at any time. This gives incredible freedom to explore as you work, without ever feeling “locked in” by what has been done up to that point.

Non-Linear Production

Create modifications in a non-destructive way with the help of the 3D Layers system. From the pose of your model to intensity of fine details, layers allow you change your mind about your artwork at any time.

Another alternative is to work with multiple models, aka SubTools. Each SubTool retains its own settings, details qualities and layers, for even more creative freedom.

Fine Details Creation

ZBrush models can be divided up to 100 million polygons per individual part (named SubTools). This offers sufficient surface resolution to use alphas (grey scale images) or 3D shapes to produce life-accurate fine details like scars, skin pores and wrinkles, as well as hard surface details like rivets or scratches. This is where ZBrush stands apart, making your models look amazingly real.

3D Painting

Because your model in ZBrush can have as many polygons as even the largest texture map has pixels, painting on a 3D model in ZBrush utilizes PolyPaint. This consists of painting each vertex on a model's surface without first assigning a texture map or even creating the associated UVs. ZBrush 2021:

ZBrush 2021 introduces a Dynamics system along with Controlled Cloth Sculpting and a revisiting of our Dynamic Subdivision feature. We’ve also added new features to ZModeler, as well as introducing iMage 3D support to ZBrush and giving it the ability to open native-format files created by ZBrushCoreMini.

The ZBrush engine itself has also been enhanced, finding ways to improve performance across the board. You will find that ZBrush 2021 sculpts more fluidly, as well as taking less time to perform other operations such as DynaMesh.

Introducing Dynamics

Enhance your sculpting with a Dynamics system that allows any surface to be contracted, expanded, inflated or draped with gravity. Use masking to pin a portion of the mesh to create a point of interest or use a mask to create a unique interaction that can allow the surface to be rolled on itself. Create realistic cloth folds - even on a low resolution plane. Place your mesh, turn on the collision volume and any desired controls, then watch as ZBrush drapes the cloth mesh over any other visible meshes.

Controlled Cloth:

Sculpting

Special brushes have been introduced which use the Dynamics engine to give unique capabilities for interacting with the cloth surface. As examples, you can choose where folds will lay or simply grab the geometry to move it freely in the work space and create folds in real-time. The ClothTwister brush simulates twisted cloth. ClothWind allows directional movement. ClothPinchTrails will create a seam with pinched cloth wherever your brush stroke takes place on the surface.

Dynamic Subdiv Revisited:

Dynamic Subdiv provides a working preview of your subdivision levels without actually increasing the base polygon count. This feature is now taken a step further by allowing you to add an adjustable thickness to any single piece of planar geometry.

A piece of geometry can also be added to each polygon as a completely interactive instance. Select from the library of presets to make a surface look like canvas or denim jeans. Even select a piece of armor to create repeatable chainmail.

Performance:

Even more performance enhancements have now been added to ZBrush. We revisited the systems behind the sculpting brushes along with many other popular features. Speed has increased across all sectors, including faster response time with high polygon models, increased DynaMesh speed and much more. In addition, a new Optimal option for smart management of multithreading will always maintain the right amount of threads ZBrush needs with your system for the best performance.

 

ZModeler Upgraded:

New functions have been added to the already powerful ZModeler brush system.

Extrude Edge:

It’s never been easier to build a plane up into what you imagine or construct a completely new piece of geometry that fits into an existing sculpt. The new Edge Extrude feature gives you the ability to build with one edge, multiple edges, complete edge loops and/or polyloops -- with interactive edge snapping. Not only can you extrude an edge to snap to the adjacent face but you can enable SnapToSurface to allow the new edges to snap to an underlying surface.

Equidistant Inset:

With Equidistant Inset you can inset a single polygon or region of polygons and all newly created topology will be equidistant from the existing topology. The result is a perfect new set of polygons.

 

Nanomesh:

Modifications:

Continuing to expand on the already powerful instancing system of NanoMesh, ZBrush 2021 now gives you the ability to edit the instance mesh while it is in place within the scene. Combining Split Screen with NanoMesh, this throws wide open your ability to create and adjust without adding unwieldy numbers of polygons.

iMage3D GIF and PNG Formats:

The iMage 3D format provides a unique way to share both an image of your work and the 3D model itself with others, all in a single GIF or PNG file. This file can be posted on any website where it will appear as a regular 2D image and once opened in ZBrush the complete model with all its SubTools is ready to edit.
